AIHS Exchange Learning Programmes place students and faculty at partner institutions across East Africa and beyond — and welcome incoming learners to AIHS — creating structured exposure to different health systems, patient populations, and professional environments. Placements are governed by formal learning agreements with defined goals, credit recognition, structured supervision, and built-in reflection. You return with comparative knowledge of health systems that strengthens your practice, broadens your network, and improves your candidacy for regional and international roles.
Health systems across Africa share common challenges but address them differently — and training that exposes students only to their home institution produces practitioners with one lens on a multi-lens problem. Cross-institutional exposure builds the comparative thinking and continental networks that regional employers, development organisations, and research consortia increasingly value.
Expose AIHS students and faculty to diverse health systems, clinical environments, and professional cultures across East Africa, with academic credit transfer and cross-institutional recognition of outcomes.
Build lasting professional networks and create pathways for collaborative research between AIHS and partner institutions.
Short-term placements (4–8 weeks): supervised clinical or community health practice at a partner institution, for second- and third-year certificate and diploma students.
Extended placements (one semester / ~16 weeks): full academic exchange with credit transfer, supervised clinical practice, and a placement research assignment, jointly supervised by AIHS and the host institution.
All placements follow a standard cycle: pre-departure orientation → supervised placement with weekly reflection → midpoint check-in → closing reflection and placement report → re-integration debrief at AIHS.

AIHS covers facilitation, learning agreement administration, and pre/post-placement support. Students meet their own travel, accommodation, and host-institution fees. Limited bursaries are available on a competitive basis.
