Africa does not only need more health workers — it needs the specialists, educators, and researchers who train them and shape the systems they work within. AIHS Fellowships are competitive, mentored programmes of 12 to 24 months for qualified health professionals ready to move from frontline practice into specialist, research, or education roles. All tracks are workplace-embedded — fellows remain in service delivery while training. Each fellow is paired with a senior AIHS mentor and, where applicable, a co-mentor from a partner institution. Fellowship frameworks are aligned with East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences (ECSA-CHS) standards.
East Africa faces shortages not just of health workers, but of the specialists, educators, and researchers the system depends on — and training them has historically meant expensive overseas study with no guarantee of return. AIHS Fellowships offer a different model: advanced, mentored training at home, embedded in the health system, oriented towards Africa's actual health challenges.
Develop specialist clinical, educational, or research competencies in qualified health professionals and produce graduates who strengthen the institutions they return to.
Generate defined, high-quality outputs — clinical portfolios, curriculum products, or research publications — aligned to Uganda's and the region's health priorities, and build an AIHS-trained fellowship network contributing to health system strengthening across East and Central Africa.
Track 1 — Clinical Sub-specialisation (18–24 months): supervised clinical training in a defined specialist area, producing a competency portfolio aligned to ECSA-CHS requirements where applicable.
Track 2 — Health Professions Education (12 months, part-time blended): for professionals transitioning into or deepening their role as educators — curriculum design, clinical teaching, assessment, and education leadership.
Track 3 — Applied Health Systems Research (12 months): mentored research with dual supervision (AIHS + external co-mentor), producing a policy brief, conference presentation, or manuscript submission.
All tracks include monthly mentorship sessions, quarterly progress reviews, participation in the AIHS Fellows' Seminar Series, and a closing symposium presentation.
Fees vary by track and duration. A limited number of fully funded and part-funded places are available annually through AIHS institutional and development partner agreements. Payment plans and employer-funded (institutional sponsorship) applications are accepted.
